Job Title: Nursing Assistant (Acute Care Team)

Position: Health Care Provider for Veteran Patients

Job Type: Full Time

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases, above minimum rate of the grade may be available.

Shift: Day shift 7:30am - 8:00pm for 12hr. shift and 7:30am - 4:00pm 8hr. shift, Monday - Friday, Rotating weekends and Holidays.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participates in activities to improve the quality of care for veteran patients.
  • Ensures the Veteran is wearing the correct identification bracelet.
  • Adheres to responsibilities of timely maintenance of all required education.
  • Supervises patients and mentors other Nursing Assistants (NAs) in personal hygiene, resting, and eating.
  • Feeds and bathes patients who require assistance.
  • Helps patients in and out of bed and with mobile devices.
  • Instructs and assists patients in gaining independence in activities of daily living.
  • Contributes to a safe, clean, clutter-free, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Follows Medical Center and Nursing Service policies and procedures.
  • Provides care to patients in isolation and on chemotherapy precautions, maintaining privacy.
  • Performs and mentors NAs in a variety of general nursing duties.
  • Maintains oxygen therapy as directed by the RN or as per care plan.
  • Instructs patients in range of motion exercises, turning, positioning, ambulation, and routine care procedures.
  • Prepares patients for tests, examinations, treatments, and surgeries.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, sputum, and stool.
  • Initiates CPR and other emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Observes and reports patients' physical and mental status, reporting unusual changes to the RN.
  • Assists with the admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
  • Performs other assignments designated by the nurse in charge for patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safe handling practices involving hazardous medications.

Required Skills

Core Skills

  • Effective communication skills for reporting and recording pertinent information.
  • Knowledge of standardized nursing principles and procedures.
  • Ability to assist in teaching patients activities of daily living.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and observational skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in a medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, etc.).
  • Certification in CPR.

Requirements

Experience: Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to NA occupation.

Education: Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course of study or program of less than one year as a NA.

License & Certification:

  • Day shift 7:30am - 4:00pm for 8hr. shift.
  • Rotating weekends and Holidays.
