Job Responsibilities
- Adheres to the on-call rotation to be informed of any patient safety occurrences.
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors and Code of Conduct.
- Annually reviews/promotes The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals by planning, directing, and monitoring implementation aspects related to those goals.
- Annually reviews/promotes the organizational Patient Safety Plan.
- Adheres to regulatory requirements set forth by federal and state agencies relative to patient safety.
- Prepares and participates in announced and unannounced surveys and inspections (DOH, CMS, TJC) at all UPMC Susquehanna sites; promotes ongoing accreditation readiness.
- Reviews patient safety occurrences with departmental leaders and managers, identifying trends, making recommendations for action, and assuring compliance with the program.
- Serves as a role model to foster a patient safety culture in the organization.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates in the hospital-wide performance improvement efforts through data gathering and analysis.
- Communicates significant events, using the Patient Safety Triad model and through established mechanisms within the required time frame.
- Develops and presents formal and informal patient safety education to hospital staff throughout the organization on an ongoing basis.
- Reviews patient safety events; investigates actual and potential risks in the clinical operations of the hospital through rounds, chart reviews, interviews, physical inspection, and other means as necessary.

Requirements
Experience: 5 years of clinical experience OR experience in patient safety and regulatory or a combination of both is required.
Education: Master's degree in nursing or a healthcare-related area is required.
License & Certification:
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
- Certification in CPPS (Certified Professional in Patient Safety) within two (2) years of hire.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Schedule:
- Travel is approximately 25% to other hospital sites.
