Job Responsibilities

Provide competent clinical surgical care consistent with professional standards.
Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs of self.
Attend education programs based on identified learning needs.
Use educational materials relevant to patient population.
Assess readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers.
Identify expected patient outcomes specific to surgical procedures through assessment, implementation, and evaluation of care.
Communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Demonstrate competence in the care of surgical patients with complex problems.
Utilize healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures in delivery of surgical care.
Organize and prioritize care according to patient/family needs.
Consult with appropriate resources regarding patients with complex care issues.
Develop goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations.
Achieve goals and objectives within identified time frame or renegotiate with supervisor.
Participate in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities.
Effectively use communication systems.
Promote a safe, clean and secure hospital environment.
Recognize data from complex situations to prioritize the delivery of surgical care.
Synthesize assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others.
Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the surgical plan of care.

Read journals that contain studies or evidence based practice articles applicable to surgical nursing care.

Requirements

Experience: Successful completion of the 6 month AORN Perioperative 101 OR Residency Program.

Education: Graduation from school of professional nursing.

License & Certification:

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
